Two down, one to go [2013-09-08]

It is Monday morning and we will be picked up soon to go to Mlangarini Secondary School, the third and final school for the 2013 Tanzania projects for Reneal IEO.  It’s been a long week but IT labs at two schools are now completed and ready for operation.

We have finished up our work at Mukulat Secondary School.  Wednesday was a late night, chasing and extinguishing a bug.  Thursday Neal spent time with the student computer specialists, most of whom were very new computer users.  The Ubuntu Linux educational games such as Tux Type, Tux Math, and GCompris are a great way to engage users while building important skills.  Friday we had two training sessions for teachers, one for the more experienced group and the other for the new learners.  We also had some members of the community sit in, which was wonderful.  The room echoed with the sounds of the games, and it was hard to get everyone to stop playing!  When the second session ended, we had the official turn-over ceremony for the computer system.  The school board president first made a speech.  It was thrilling to hear how he spoke of the opportunities that computers could offer to the students at Mukulat – it is exactly the reason why Reneal IEO exists.  Finally Neal and I, on behalf of Reneal IEO, handed a ceremonial keyboard to the school board president.  Then he handed it to the school head.  It’s been a long road for this system, and it was very fulfilling to know that it is finally home.
