School 6 [2015-03-10]

We’re back in America now, trying to sort through action items we brought with us from Cebu as well as deal with the usual return-to-America tasks and readjustment.  Before I settle into recap mode though, I want to give a quick report on our final week in the Philippines.

During the entire process of planning for this trip, we had great hopes for adding a “School #6” to our 2015 project plan of installing the Reneal IEO system in five new schools.  There were boxes and bags labeled “School #6” shipped ahead and stowed in our baggage.  Our hopes ebbed though as our schedule got delayed due to Neal’s medical issue.  However Reneal IEO Team Philippines rose to the challenge, got us back on schedule, and during our last week in Cebu they did the installation at our School #6, Compostela Night High School.

It was satisfying in so many ways.  First and foremost, we were so thankful that our team persevered in completing the work, even when we couldn’t be with them most of the time.  Secondly, we are so pleased to be able to support a school that provides an avenue for working students to get their diplomas.  It is a small school yet, so they don’t have many resources.  They are very excited to have their own computer lab now, even though it is small!  And finally, we were excited to watch the new batch of Computer Student Specialists from Compostela National High School and Compostela Night High School join in the effort.  This was their first training opportunity, and they put in so much energy and enthusiasm to complete the installation at Compostela Night High School. We are thankful for their service to the students and teachers in their community.

I had one other very interesting task last week.  A huge annual challenge for school heads is creating the school schedule.  With 41 sections of students, 60+ teachers, and many constraints, it’s a time-consuming problem each year at Compostela National High School.  Neal found an open source timetabling program called FET that seems to fit the bill perfectly.  I spent lots of time tinkering with FET, and I am extremely excited about applying the program in May when we return to Cebu.  The timing is perfect, since classes start in June.  I gave a demo to the principal, guidance officer, and Ma’am Nerry on Friday morning, and they were just as dazzled as I am.  I am eager to share this with other schools to ease yet another administrative burden they face each year.

So now we have a couple of months to rest, recharge, and prepare for May.  I’ll put up a summary soon of the 2015 installations in the Philippines, and we’ll get the website updated as well.  It was extremely successful for Reneal IEO, and we send our thanks again to Team Philippines and the schools for their hard work and support!
