Planning and Prep [2019-07-13]

Things are heating up here at Reneal Headquarters.  Neal has been in the throes of software development, and I’m doing testing, packing, and planning.  Reneal Team Philippines is about to start school visits in Cebu, and Reneal Team Tanzania is helping prepare for our rapidly approaching trip.  It’s all-hands-on-deck right now, with schools in both countries in session again.

Reneal’s team in Cebu has been waiting for the enrollment data to finalize before making school visits.  At last, Lloyd, Rhog, and Ervin are about ready to start their work, checking out the systems at each school and making client repairs.  We were happy to get a photo already from Tayud National High School in Consolacion showing the Linux Penguins in flight there.

Neal has been hard at work on adding the Cisco Packet Tracer simulation software to the Reneal system.  Sir Louie Romano at Cebu Technological University in Carmen found this wonderful resource for his students, and Neal has devoted many hours to its configuration and use on the server.  He is (hopefully) close to sending it out to Sir Louie.

I packed up two boxes of equipment last night to send to Cebu.  We received a generous donation of five desktops and monitors from Free Geek in Portland, OR (www.freegeek.org).  This equipment was relayed down to us by Jennifer Peachey and Reneal Board Member Priscilla Batty – thanks so much, Jennifer and Priscilla!  We also received some surplus monitors from Arm Corporation, thanks to Reneal Board Member Katherine Yen.  All of these items will be underway early next week to schools in Cebu.

In the meantime, there is an enormous stack of hardware here for Tanzania awaiting final testing, disposition, and packing.  Once Reneal School Liaison David Nyangaka and Reneal Computer Technician Robert Nyangaka get the final update to me from the existing schools, we’ll finalize our plan.  Four new secondary schools have been selected to receive computer labs, and David is helping them prepare the classroom for the lab.

The next month is going to be intense as we near departure for Tanzania.  We are excited to get back to the schools in Arusha District and be with the Super Users again!
