Phase 2 Continues [2021-09-02]

Last month, Reneal Team Tanzania began the 2021 Phase 2 work in Handeni District in Tanga Region.  Thanks to a generous donation of laptop computers from Apto Solutions, six public high schools in Handeni District have new computer labs!  Reneal’s latest Phase 2 project was much closer to home.  Last week Reneal Team Tanzania installed a new computer lab at Arusha Day Secondary School, and they returned on Monday for Super Use training and Teacher Orientation.

There are still four schools to go in Phase 2, all in Meru District.  This is another new area for Reneal albeit much closer to home; Meru is adjacent to Arusha District.  As soon as each school finishes their preparations for the computer room, Reneal’s Team will do the installation and training.  The remaining four schools should be completed in the coming month.  Reneal Country Director David Nyangaka is working hard on the logistics and scheduling for each of the installations.

Neal sent a software update to the Team last month.  This update adds the 2020 National Exams to the server, along with some other exam papers.  The update also changes the backup approach slightly and does some bug fixes.  The Team will be deploying this update at all schools over the next few weeks.

On a more mundane level, Neal and I worked last night with Anold Christopher, Reneal’s Technician in Longido District.  The server at Longido A-Level was manifesting a “kernel panic” while booting, precluding use of the system.  This was a mysterious error indeed, and Anold worked with us for multiple hours as we troubleshot the problem together.  What a relief to finally to discover the problem, albeit not the root cause.  There is still work to be done, but at least the Longido A-Level server is back in action.  We have learned a lot over the last few years about remote troubleshooting, and we can’t say enough about Reneal Team Tanzania’s skill, patience, and resourcefulness!
