Out in the field [2014-10-09]

It’s Thursday night, and we’re here at Mwandet Secondary School doing our first 2014 Tanzania installation.  Since it is a rather long, rocky, dusty drive from Arusha, we are staying here at the school from Wednesday through Friday.  As is usual, we have been astonished and humbled by the generosity and assistance we’ve received.  We are excited to report that we are nearly finished already with the installation here, with full-up system testing planned for tomorrow.

This (for us) miraculously fast installation was due to the gracious help offered to us by Habari Node Ltd., an ISP provider here in Arusha.  We met the owner of Habari Node through a connection in our church in Fremont – small world!  Two very skilled Habari Node employees came today to install all of the needed Ethernet cabling in the Mwandet SS computer lab.  And not only does it work well, it looks extremely professional – many thanks to Prosper, Upendo, and Habari Node for this fantastic assistance!  John, a volunteer with Arusha Node Marie, also visited to learn more about the Reneal IEO system; this may be an exciting opportunity for collaboration.  Between the efforts of the Mwandet SS teachers and parents, Mr. Amani the IT teacher, the cabling work donated by Habari Node, and the laptop computers donated by a generous company in America, the computer lab has come alive.

Most teachers live full-time here on campus, and we have been graciously hosted by Mr. Peter, the physics teacher.  He has moved out of his room temporarily to give us a place to stay.  We spent Wednesday evening along with many Mwandet students sitting outside on the ground in the cool air watching a soccer game between the teachers and students.  The moon rising behind Mt. Meru gave a beautiful glow to the clouds.  It was truly a night to remember.
