One month to go [2018-07-15]

The 2018 Tanzania work has been on the radar screen for months; we began thinking about it pretty much right away last October when we returned from the 2017 trip.  However it’s with a jolt that we realize suddenly that we’re about a month out from departure.  We still have some software testing to do, as well as all of the packing.  Thankfully we’ll have help on that from some of our Board of Directors members, but even so it will be a trial.

This last week was consumed by a very fruitful trip to Seattle.  My sister-in-law is a family practice doctor, and her office recently upgraded to larger monitors.  She graciously contacted management, and they agreed to donate the obsolete equipment to Reneal.  Awesome!  I flew up Monday to work on getting the equipment (71 monitors, 99 keyboards, and 85 mice) from Seattle to the Philippines.  The plan didn’t unfold entirely as expected, but I am pleased to say that the boxes shipped out of here on Friday bound for five schools in Cebu.  Reneal is so grateful to Dr. Julie Komarow, Traci Youngblood, and everyone else at Sound Family Medicine of Bonney Lake, WA for this generous donation and for their help in getting it packed.  A big thank you also goes to Michael Martinez, son of Reneal Board Member Sharon Fingold.  Michael is now a Seattlite, and he came to Bonney Lake on Tuesday for a very long day of box-packing and hauling.  Among other contributions, Michael designed the Reneal logo back in 2012 when we first incorporated.  I couldn’t have done this without his help.  Check out the Facebook post with pictures here.

Our computer technicians and OJT in Cebu, Rhog, Lloyd, and Ervin, were poised to head to northern Cebu last week but the trip has been postponed until the 22nd.  Instead they headed to one of our new schools, Calero Integrated School, to discuss the installation.  Tables are still being built, but they should be ready soon.  In the meantime, I have now completed the needed equipment shipments to Cantumog National High School and to the CTU Carmen library for those new installations.  All in all, things are coming together extremely well for the late 2018/early 2019 Reneal IEO work in the Philippines.  We have a bit more equipment in the garage to send, but the critical needs have been met.  We are so grateful to the donors who make Reneal’s work possible!

In Tanzania, our sympathies go to Reneal School Liaison David Nyangaka and new assistant Robert Nyangaka on the passing of their mother.  We send our deepest condolences to the family.  The joy of Reneal’s work is meeting so many wonderful people, but we grieve with them too during times of loss.
