One to go [2019-09-29]

Just one more new computer lab to install this year!  We will travel to Olturmet Secondary School Wednesday to begin the work.  We’ll be joined by our partners from Habari Node and Arusha Node Marie, who make our work so much easier.  This past week we finished two installations, including our second MacBook workstation lab for the A-Level students at Mlangarini Secondary School.  We also installed a computer lab at Olokii Secondary School, and we’ll return to Olokii this coming week for the teacher orientation.

The week’s highlight was at Mlangarini, where Form 3 students shared the progress of their website development projects with our team.  When we first installed a computer lab at Mlangarini back in 2013, the students were just learning how to use a mouse.  To see how far they have come in the years since was really thrilling!  We are so grateful to the Super Users at Mlangarini – Mr. Novatus, Mr. Moses, and Mr. Martin – for sharing their skill and knowledge with the students.

It was really a pleasure to install the new computer lab at Olokii SS.  They are a very distant school, about 30 km from downtown Arusha.  With 650 students, 16 teachers, and limited resources, they are challenged to provide quality education.  The teachers told us that many students must walk up to 20 km (about 12 miles) one-way to get to school.  During the rainy season, rivers form and block students from coming at all.  Thus it was great to be a part of the team providing these kids with a new window on the world, in the form of a computer lab.  Teachers dropped by as we worked, and students flooded in to check out the computers as we were wrapping up on Wednesday.  We hope these computers last a long time in the service of Olokii students and teachers!

We are already planning for 2020.  Please drop us a line if you know of a potential source of laptops that can have a new life in schools in Tanzania.  You can reach Reneal at contact.reneal@gmail.com.  Donations are fully tax-deductible.
