Making the rounds [2019-07-21]

The Reneal Team in the Philippines, Lloyd Tuñacao, Rhog Sampan, and Ervin Formentera, got off to a great start this week visiting the Reneal schools in Cebu.  They are making repairs and helping the teachers make the new list of students for this school year.  The student list makes it very easy for students to sign in, and it automatically generates a personal folder for the student the first time that student signs in at the beginning of the school year.  The guys have already visited Tabok and Jagobiao National High Schools in Mandaue City and Tayud and Jugan National High Schools in Consolacion.  More visits are scheduled for this week.  We are so grateful to have this hard-working team!

Neal finished up the 2019 Tanzania software (operating system, programs, and educational material) this week, and I did the testing.  There are a few minor tweaks yet, but everything is just about ready for loading onto the servers we are taking to Arusha next month.  We are carrying six full-up servers and the parts for two other servers (we’ll reuse the cases at two of the existing schools).  Four of the servers are for brand new Reneal schools, two are to replace temporary laptop servers installed in early 2019, and the final two will be upgrades to the two oldest servers currently deployed in Arusha District.

Neal also made great progress this week on the new Mac-based Reneal system.  Thanks to VMware’s generous donation of Macbooks, we will be deploying two small pilot labs at high schools that we currently serve.  These labs will specifically be for the students in the final two years of their high school education (“A-level”) – essentially like grades 11 and 12 in the US.  Few school offer A-level, so it serves as a new opportunity for Reneal.  The experience we gain from these pilot labs will guide development for the 2020 deployment of the rest of the Macbook donation.

Reneal Board Member Katherine Yen came over to Reneal HQ on Friday to begin packing the equipment we’ll be taking in August.  We’re expecting to have around 18 boxes, so it’s a big job!  It’s great to have it started now, and over half of the laptops have already undergone final testing and wrapping.

One month to go!
