Making the rounds [2014-11-08]

Our last week in Tanzania was filled mainly with follow-up visits at the schools in the Arusha area with the Reneal IEO system: Mukulat Secondary School, Mlangarini Secondary School, Mwandet Secondary School, and Ilkding’a Secondary School.  Neal made some final updates, include adding some health videos that we obtained from another U.S. non-profit, Empower Tanzania (http://www.empowertz.org/).  And finally, we completed negotiations with Arusha Node Marie, Habari Node Ltd, Reneal IEO, and the Arusha District Council for a collaboration agreement.  As we flew out of Kilimanjaro International Airport last evening, we felt true satisfaction for the 2014 projects in Tanzania.

First the health videos…  In one of those wonderful coincidences, we shared a flight from Mwanza to Arusha last Sunday with representatives of Empower Tanzania.  They are an organization doing fantastic things with the people of Tanzania!  During the flight, one of their volunteers copied their health videos onto our videocamera SD card.  We then added the videos to the server this week for each of the Arusha-area schools.  The teachers really seemed to find them useful, and we are pleased to have this wonderful new resource available to the schools.

Our hope is that the collaboration agreement will help to improve the support that our organizations collectively provide to students and teachers in the area of technology.  We met with Arusha Node Marie representatives on Thursday to discuss specific monitoring and training activities that they can pursue in our absence.  And Reneal IEO will be working to bring more computer resources to schools in the Arusha area, through consultation with the Arusha District Council. Habari Node will help us with installation and minor repairs.  It is a partnership that will help each of our organizations, and we are so pleased to have the buy-in and support of the Arusha District Council to make it happen.

Once we return to California and have a chance to catch up, we’ll post a summary of the 2014 Tanzania projects.  All in all, it was a great year!
