Follow-up [2015-03-22]

Our time overseas is always limited, and invariably we end up identifying tasks that we just don’t have time to complete while we’re there.  So now that we’ve been back home a couple of weeks, we are busy following up on various tasks from our time in the Philippines.

Neal has been updating his screen and video streamer program.  This program allows a teacher to either start a video or do work on their screen and have their screen be shown on all of the other computer screens in the lab simultaneously.  Given that we are generally working with older computers, most with 10/100 Mbps network interfaces, this is more challenging than it sounds.  Neal has continued to refine the program so that now the screen of the “master computer” is automatically resized to 1024x768 to limit the amount of data that must be streamed.  There are still some older computers with less memory that aren’t capable of working with the streamer, but it’s looking very promising!  We hope to do some trainings in the Philippines on using the streamer when we return in mid-May, prior to the start of school year 2015-2016.

Neal is also creating an updated version of his systemCheck diagnosis and repair application.  This version can be automated to run periodically for each system.

I finished a new electronic template for the Philippines Department of Education Form 6, which is a consolidation of grade information for a school.  However I still have a few other templates on my list to create.  I have also been downloading lots of videos from YouTube: tutorials for the Gimp and Geogebra applications on the Reneal IEO system as well as educational songs for math and science teachers to use in their classes.  One big task yet before we return in mid-May is to write up basic instructions for using the FET program for class scheduling for schools.  I am very excited about sharing that program with other schools as they prepare for the new school year!
