DONE! [2015-02-28]

The 2015 project plan for the Philippines is officially completed!  Jade and Jillian returned yesterday from Kawit National High School in Medellin, located in northern Cebu.  They installed the Reneal IEO system including sixteen laptops donated by a company in America.  Kawit NHS was badly damaged by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, so it is especially thrilling to extend our work there!  In addition the principal and IT teacher at Kawit NHS have been very eager to use the system, so we are very thankful for the work that Jade and Jillian did over the last four days to install the system and train the teachers.  Just as we did at Daanbantayan NHS last year, they stayed at the school since it is too far for a daily commute from Compostela.  And just like last year, it sounded like lots of fun in addition to the hard work!

Waves of hardware have been moving out to schools this week.  Of course, the sixteen laptops and a server head north to Kawit NHS on Tuesday.  The guys also took along six of the Ft. Collins desktops to deliver to Daanbantayan NHS, which is near Kawit.  Six more Ft. Collins units were picked up Monday by Sir Jezreel, the IT teacher at Carmen National High School, and the final six desktops from Ft. Collins will be picked up this Wednesday by Sir Chay, the IT teacher at Tayud NHS in Consolacion.  Those three large schools, each part of our 2014 project plan, have been very active in their use of the system.  More units will help them serve more students.  Eight of the Aboitizland units that I couldn’t coax to life have been transferred to Compostela National High School for use by the 9th grade students studying computer hardware assembly.  These will give great hands-on experience for the students!

The bulk of what remains in the apartment is destined for a sixth 2015 installation at Compostela Night High School.  We hope that Team Philippines can do that installation this week yet before Neal and I depart for America.  It is a good feeling to see the “warehouse” being emptied, knowing that the computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, UPSs, and so forth are now being used in the schools!

However an empty warehouse means that we’ll be seeking donations of used computer hardware again – it’s never too early to start thinking about 2016!  For information about minimum specifications, please see our How to Help page.  Help us transform obsolete hardware into opportunity for students in the Philippines!
