Cebu news [2018-04-17]

The Reneal Board of Directors met on Sunday evening.  One of the main topics on the agenda was reporting on the recent work in Cebu as well as reviewing candidate schools that were evaluated while we were there.  I am happy to report that the Board has approved moving forward with projects at Calero Integrated School in Liloan, Cantumog National High School in Carmen, and the main library at Cebu Technological University-Carmen.  While these schools must still agree to and meet numerous expectations, we are pleased to start down the path of implementation with them.

In my last blog post, I reported on the computers received from the Bay Area chapter of World Computer Exchange (www.worldcomputerexchange.org).  I’ve finished the testing of those units, and we’re in the midst of making deployment decisions for them.  We sent off seven boxes last Friday to two of our very active schools in Cebu: 10 desktop computers for Tayud National High School and 11 desktop computers for Daanbantayan National High School.

The laptops from WCE are a bit of a conundrum.  Some are rather large and/or heavy, which means shipping to Tanzania will be expensive.  My guess at the moment is that 10-15 out of the total of 23 laptops will make sense to send to Tanzania, with the others destined to the new computer labs in Cebu.  That leaves us still lacking about 50 laptops for the August trip to Tanzania.  We’re trying to put out feelers for more units.  Please contact us at contact.reneal@gmail.com for leads on laptop donations!  Our goal is to install new computer labs at four public high schools in Arusha this year.  Right now students at these schools have no computers whatsoever, so these projects can open new worlds for hundreds of students.
