A busy month [2023-04-08]

Another two computer labs are up and running!  Reneal Team Tanzania Robert Nyangaka and Juma Ramadhani traveled to Kondoa District in Dodoma Region for these installations.  We welcome Bicha and Bukulu Secondary Schools to the Reneal family!  In addition, the Team expanded the existing computer lab at Amani Abeid Karume Secondary School.  We are so excited to have more computers for the students now at this very active lab.  Thanks so much to Apto Solutions for making all of this work possible!

Reneal Team Tanzania has finished visiting almost all of the Reneal computer labs to make some software updates, add some new educational content, and make sure the labs are running well.  This was a big – but important – effort to make Reneal’s work sustainable.

Now our sights are fixed on the 2023 Phase 1 projects.  Reneal Country Director David Nyangaka has completed the evaluation process, and ten schools are now working with him to prepare their computer rooms.  Here in the US, we have received and tested most of the equipment from Apto Solutions.  The shipment should go out soon.  The Phase 1 work will focus on three regions: Arusha (Arusha City, Karatu District, and Meru District), Dodoma, and Manyara (Babati District).

David’s work with the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) continues to bear fruit.  UCSAF is a Tanzania government agency committed to increase access to communication services in rural Tanzania, and they are supporting many Reneal schools with internet access.

We have continued to work with the JRI Institute of Technology to plan training for the Reneal computer teachers.  The wheels have turned slowly here in the US, but I think we are getting closer to kicking off this effort.  We are very grateful for the enthusiasm (and patience) of our partners at JRIIT.

Through JRIIT, we were connected with Teacher-in-a-Box (TIB), an Australian NGO that deploys servers connected to a wireless device.  The server is packed with educational content, and it can be accessed via teachers’ phones or tablets.  TIB sent us a disk and wireless to try it out.  Neal is very excited to explore this concept, and we are hoping to deploy some sample TIB sites in Tanzania.  In addition, he has been testing out an idea to attach a wireless device to a Reneal server similar to the TIB system, so that teachers can access the content by phone/tablet along with the computer lab being used for  students.
