Boxes received! [2020-09-28]

The past week has been a rollercoaster, but I’m thrilled to report that the 18 boxes of computer equipment from Reneal arrived at Kilimanjaro Airport early Friday morning and were handed over safely to David Nyangaka, Reneal’s School Liaison in Tanzania.  David and other government officials in Arusha Region worked wonders to make it a seamless process at the receiving end.  This equipment is headed now to seven new schools in Arusha Region!  And it is really exciting to know now that Reneal has another viable means to get equipment to Arusha.

The truck showed up here at Reneal headquarters on Friday September 18th.  The driver expertly stacked the boxes on two pallets and shrink-wrapped them for the voyage.  The following Monday, we got the flight schedule from Vantage Point Services, the local freight company we’ve been working with.  Everything was a go!  Except… on Tuesday morning, the airline let Vantage Point know that our scheduled flight into Kilimanjaro International Airport had been cancelled, along with all future flights.  But by Tuesday afternoon, we got the good news that they had been able to book us on earlier flights.  That of course was exciting, other than the fact that David suddenly had three fewer days to get his not-inconsiderable receiving arrangements done.  But as usual, David worked his logistical magic and was at the airport early Friday morning, paperwork in hand, to meet the incoming flight.

At this end, I was tracking the flights using flightaware.com, sending updates to David as the boxes traveled from LAX to the Netherlands to Qatar and finally to Tanzania.  While it took a while for the boxes to clear customs once they arrived in Tanzania, everything went smoothly and I got the message at 1:30 a.m. Friday the 25th that the boxes were safely stored at the Arusha Regional Office and ready for deployment.

There’s of course a lot of work to do now for the installations, but we are all feeling very relieved that the unknowns of shipping have been surmounted and everything is there now ready for deployment.  We are so grateful to the folks at Vantage Point Services for walking Reneal through this new process.  And of course we couldn’t have done it with David’s hard work, as well as the cooperation and help of many government officials in Arusha and at the airport.
