Back home in Cebu [2019-01-22]

Saturday morning found us with boxes and duffel bags lined up at the door heading for the Philippines.  After an uneventful 24 hours or so, we arrived here in our second home of Cebu.  It’s always great to be back!  We’ve had a chance to see many friends and colleagues already, and in the coming weeks we look forward to being together with many more.  We have a busy schedule lined up to visit many of our partner schools for updates and repairs.  Reneal Team Philippines has been very productive in our absence, and we’re especially looking forward to visiting some of Reneal’s new installations that Neal and I haven’t had a chance to see yet.

One other major goal we have this year is updating the original Reneal computer system at Compostela National High School-Day Class.  Developed during our US Peace Corps days, this system was very complex and distributed across the entire campus.  In discussions with Sir Jade, the Reneal coordinator here in Cebu, we’ve decided to simplify the system in order to make it easier to maintain and update.  Yesterday we spent quite a bit of time brainstorming with the teachers at Compostela NHS to identify a new architecture that supports the legacy files stretching back to 2007 while allowing for the latest updates.  Neal and I are both excited that we have a good path forward.  We will embark on that work in late February.

Today we’ll begin visits to our new 2018 schools: Calero Integrated School in Liloan, Cantumog National High School in Carmen, and Compostela Science and Technology High School here in Compostela.  Next week Reneal Team Philippines travels to Northern Cebu to visit several Reneal computer labs in Daanbantayan and Medellin.  Then Week 3 finds us completing visits to the three new Reneal computer labs installed in 2018 at Cebu Technological University in Carmen.  We can tell already it’s going to be a very busy time here!

Meanwhile in Tanzania, Reneal will be working tomorrow with our wonderful partners Arusha Node Marie and Habari Node to install a computer lab at Osiligi Secondary School.  This will be the 15th secondary school in Arusha District with a Reneal system!  We are so grateful to our partners, to Reneal School Liaison David Nyangaka, and to Reneal computer technician Robert Nyangaka for making this happen.

We couldn’t do it without our donors and supporters.  Donations of computer equipment are Reneal’s life blood and allow us to bring technology to students in the Philippines and Tanzania.  Contact us at contact.reneal@gmail.com regarding donations of computer equipment.  In particular we are seeking laptop computers for our Tanzania projects later in 2019.
