Unexpected opportunity [2016-10-16]

Reneal Team Philippines finished the time in Daanbantayan with a bang, spending all last Saturday at Daanbantayan National High School rearranging the tables in Com Lab 2 and bringing up the new second server.  The 16.04 new operating system will be running in Com Lab 1 as a beta test, and Sir Chester was very pleased with the new interface and features.  All the penguins were running well by the time we finished!  It is always a joy to work with the Sir Chester and Ma’am Rubena at DNHS, and we truly appreciated having our boys Rhog and Lloyd with us to make the work lighter.

After the long trip to Daanbantayan, we declared a two-day break after we arrived home Sunday.  As usual, it wasn’t entirely work-free for Neal and me but it was nice to not have to travel more than just a few steps away from our apartment.  By Tuesday night, we were both feeling rested again.

The boys reported again Wednesday afternoon, and I went with them over to the Compostela National High School library to do some troubleshooting of units that wouldn’t boot.  Then we headed over to Compostela Night High School to do final testing of the six new clients that we installed a few weeks ago.  On Thursday all four of us went to Mulao National High School to follow up on the installation we’d done back in February of 2016.  We unpacked and installed ten Free Geek flat panel monitors, replacing the old CRTs there.  Mulao is about 13 kilometers from the National Road, and it’s really a different atmosphere there – no internet, few shops, more water buffalos than cars.  It’s a peaceful place with friendly people, and it’s always a pleasure to be there with the teachers!

Friday we divided-and-conquered.  I spent the day helping at the Division Science Contest that was hosted by Compostela.  I made a scoring template for the Quiz Bowl, so I was running that during the competition.  The boys headed back to Lagobon National High School in Mandaue City to take care of a few things there, and Neal worked in our apartment on the Bagalnga Integrated School server which needed an edit to the backup software.

Just as we thought things were winding down a bit, we were excited to discover that a huge pile of Reneal balikbayan boxes had arrived on Friday!  We shipped these boxes in mid-August, and they contain the first wave of the recent Polycom laptop donation.  While we won’t get everything deployed before we head back to the US, we’ll be able to get additional computers installed at two of our most heavily used schools, Consolacion National High School and Carmen National High School.  And now we already have a good start on the raw material we’ll need for our 2017 work!
