Round 2! [2016-03-26]

Exciting news!  The Reneal IEO Board of Directors has approved the new Cebu project plan!  We will be installing the Reneal system at Calape National High School and Tominjao National High School, both in Daanbantayan.  Daanbantayan is at the very northern tip of Cebu, and it was in the direct path of Typhoon Haiyan in November of 2013.  We are so happy that we’ll be able to support these schools that sustained a lot of damage in that catastrophe.  And in a first, we will be installing the Reneal system for three of the brand new Senior High Schools: Arcelo Memorial, Carmen, and Daanbantayan.  So although it’s a big chunk of work to install at five schools, we’ll be working with three very experienced IT teachers for the three Senior High installations.

We also plan on our trip later this year to have System Administration Training for the IT teachers of the new 2016 schools.  And there is already a lot of excitement and support for the Second Annual Cebu Open Source Software Championship!  I am in the process of drafting some guidelines.  We’ll be making some changes this year so we can accommodate more schools and also the new 11th grade.  More news soon!

A new project plan means a whole new round of collecting hardware, packing it, and shipping it.  The first five boxes went out last Tuesday, with more to follow next Friday.  This may be our biggest donation of hardware ever!  We expect to provide about 84 clients and five servers!  It is a combination of Free Geek hardware, World Computer Exchange, a US company, and some individual donations.

I am certain that these three new Senior High IT labs are only the tip of the iceberg of what is needed across the area of Cebu where we work.  Reneal IEO needs more used computers and monetary donations for servers, network switches, and of course shipping costs to make sure 11th and 12th grade students have the computer resources they need.  Please consider donating!  In 2015, over 99% of expenditures were for programs, so dollars go a long way in supporting technology in Philippine schools.
