Odds and ends [2015-11-30]

Most of the last week has been spent enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday, but we’ve accomplished a few things here.  I just prepared a draft agenda for the upcoming Reneal IEO Board of Directors meeting and got that sent out.  I’ve been doing some equipment testing, and Neal has been working on the low power, low volume, low cost (L3PCV) R&D project.  We’re now about 6 weeks out from our departure to Cebu, so that’s on our minds as well.  And as always, we’re energized by the people that we meet that share our passion for serving students and teachers around the world!

I’ve been testing the World Computer Exchange hardware that we received a week ago, and it’s gone very well.  We now have another 15 desktops and monitors to ship to Cebu for the 2016 Philippines projects!  This will allow us to expand our original five-school 2016 project plan to at least seven schools.  The next step is packing and shipping, and we hope to do that with the help of our young friend Patrick who will be visiting in a couple of weeks.  We first met Patrick when he was serving as an intern at the non-profit Books for Peace, an organization that both helped and inspired us (http://reneal.org/?q=content/salute-legacy-2013-07-07).  He is a whiz at packing, which will be a big help as we try to solve the 3-D puzzles that shipping monitors poses for us.

Last weekend we were thrilled to meet with Katherine and Marcus, friends of some of our current and former Reneal board members.  They are interested in volunteering and bring skills in marketing and engineering respectively.  In addition, they both have a heart for education and have taught at the university level.  They are welcome additions to the Reneal team!

Neal and Anil have been working on the L3PCV project, getting the parts ordered and completing initial tests.  So far, results have been promising.  The ODROID seems to work well as both server and client, with Neal reporting that most of the programs seem to be running well.  Anil is going to work on some of the video issues with the USB monitor from Acer.

December 31st is the end of the Reneal IEO fiscal year, so that always brings extra work with it: finalizing the financial statement, preparing the corporate Annual Report, filing the federal and state tax forms, and formally reviewing the financial paperwork.  It’s all a mundane but necessary part of being a transparent, responsible non-profit.  The Reneal IEO Finance Committee will be meeting soon after the end of the year to conduct the review, with tax filings to follow shortly thereafter.

The last seven boxes of equipment that we shipped in September have arrived in Cebu.  Jade is in the process of wrangling those as well as getting started with the installation work.  It will be a huge help to have some of that done before we arrive.  The biggest headache we have remaining is getting seven servers packed; we will be carrying those as airline baggage – shades of Tanzania!  I also need to work with Jade to prepare a schedule to send out to the schools so they know when to expect us.  The more I think about it, the longer the list gets!
