Northbound [2016-09-23]

Monday Reneal Team Philippines heads north to Daanbantayan for two weeks to install the system at Calape National High School and Tominjao National High School.  We will also put in a second server at Daanbantayan National High School, where they already have two computer rooms and need a little more power.  However this week, for the second week in a row, we returned to a happily familiar place.

Back in January of 2015, we installed a Reneal system at Labogon National High School in Mandaue City.  At that time, high schools here in the Philippines covered grades 7 through 10.  This year for the first time, grade 11 has been added with grade 12 to follow next year.  Grades 7-10 are now called “junior high” with grades 11 and 12 being the new “senior high”.  New buildings, new teachers, new curriculum, and so forth are needed, and so too are new computer labs.  We thus spent three days this week at the brand new Labogon Senior High installing a new computer lab.

Thanks to a generous donation from Polycom, we were able to provide twenty used laptop computers for this new lab.  Space at all schools is at a premium right now because of the major expansion of the student body, so we were very fortunate that Labogon Senior High had the space in their library to add the computers.  It is hard to convey the difficulty of planning right now, for various reasons, and we were so grateful that the principal and teachers at Labogon SHS had the room ready for installation on very short notice.

We spent three days doing the installation.  Rhog and Lloyd made all of the Ethernet cables for the client computers and did a fantastic job of routing them to the network switch.  It looks great!  Neal got the server set up, and he really enjoyed teaching the enthusiastic and knowledgeable Ma’am Judelynn about the system.  On the last afternoon, we had a short teacher orientation session for all of the senior high teachers.  The session was a bit rushed, because the UPS kept beeping due to erratic voltage and I was expecting it to drop at any second!  Thankfully we got through the training without incident.  As we were leaving, a group of students was heading in to use the computers for the first time – the best reward we could have for the hard work!  Rhog, Lloyd, Neal, and I were tired but pleased as we headed home Wednesday.

We also delivered 14 Free Geek flat panel monitors to the existing Reneal lab at Labogon, which is now solely for the use of the junior high.  These monitors will replace the old CRTs and will mitigate the low voltage problems suffered at Labogon.  It was great to see Ma’am Ganjet again!  We have truly enjoyed working with her over the last two years, and the system is running well there.  Coincidentally, one of the new DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) systems was being installed on Tuesday in Ma’am Ganjet’s lab.  This system is now based on “Share” thin clients and is being propagated throughout the Philippines.  We continue to debate Reneal’s role in the Philippines as more and more of these systems are installed.  It will be interesting to see how the systems fare side-by-side at Labogon Junior High.
