Making the rounds [2016-02-27]

Things did not slow down much this past week!  We spent Monday finishing up at Tipolo National High School, paid visits to several of our 2014/2015 schools on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and celebrated the People Power Holiday on Thursday at Compostela National High School starting a major rearrangement of a couple of computer labs.

Monday we returned to Tipolo NHS for the student and teacher orientation sessions.  That marked the official end of our installation work for this trip, so we were definitely in a celebratory mood that night!  There are now twenty schools in Cebu with the Reneal IEO system!

We had a great visit to Jagobiao NHS on Tuesday.  Sir Isidro and Sir Nelson reported that the system has been performing well, and we enjoyed talking with them about how it has been used this last year.  Neal was not feeling well Wednesday, so I went by myself to visit Arcelo Memorial NHS and Liloan NHS.  We will make a return visit to those schools in early March before we leave for the US.

Thursday I worked with a wonderful team of teachers and their family members to consolidate a couple of computer labs at Compostela NHS and to prepare a place for nine new units that were recently donated.  Neal spent Friday trying to round up some half-height LAN cards on campus to build a couple of new servers.  It was a frustrating, unsuccessful effort, and after much deliberation we decided on a Plan B that will work until our return in September.  The effort to prepare the new lab continued on Friday with some wiring and carpentry work, and we’re eagerly awaiting Tuesday to start the “putting it back together” phase!

The major highlight of the week was observing Sir Jade’s class at Arcelo Memorial NHS on Wednesday morning.  Readers of this blog have heard much about Jade over the years, and Neal and I are so proud that he is now a professional IT teacher at Arcelo.  It was truly a happy moment to see him teaching and inspiring his students, the next generation of technology workers here in the Philippines!  It’s no small task to keep a class of 77 students occupied, and Jade did a wonderful job.  Of all of the wonderful things that we’ve experienced here in the Philippines, nothing compares to seeing our friends and colleagues achieve their goals and dreams!
