Here and there [2016-06-11]

These last couple of days, Neal and I have been living vicariously through the journey of Katherine Yen and Marcus Lee, friends of Reneal IEO, as they visit Cebu.  Katherine and Marcus graciously agreed to deliver some computer hardware and supplies to Jade and the schools Cebu during their trip to the Philippines.  Meanwhile back here at headquarters, we had another great meeting yesterday with Judy and Denis Severson from The School Fund, brainstorming how we might collaborate in our work in Tanzania.

Katherine and Marcus seemingly defied jet lag by traveling immediately upon their arrival Thursday to meet Ma’am Edna at Tabok National High School in Mandaue City.  They dropped off a small desktop computer there to replace a unit that Jade and I were not able to repair earlier this year.  On Friday Jade accompanied them as they visited Compostela National High School, the Compostela Night High School, and Arcelo Memorial National High School.  They made a special delivery of blue tape, Sharpies, and high quality RJ45 connectors from Fry’s Electronics to Jade, in support of the September installations.  We’ll also be adding six more computer units at the Compostela Night High school in September, so they delivered a new 8-port network switch for that expansion.  And of course, Katherine and Marcus were treated to the amazing Filipino hospitality during their school visits – check out lunch in the photo!  In the evening, they met with our friend and colleague Sandy Famador, computer science professor at the University of the Philippines.  Katherine and Marcus both have teaching experience and a real heart for education, so we were very thankful that they could connect with Sandy.  We wish Katherine and Marcus well on the rest of their trip to the Philippines and Taiwan!

At yesterday’s meeting with Judy and Denis, Neal provided them with the necessary tools and instructions to build a server from scratch.  It’s about an 80 gigabyte image, and Neal has made the process pretty straightforward such that a new server can be built with just a few commands.  Although the main focus of The School Fund (www.theschoolfund.org) is providing scholarships to deserving students in developing countries, they have also installed computer labs in Karatu and Iringa in Tanzania.  We are discussing a possible joint project with them for 2017.  We also continue to get positive news from Reneal School Liaison David Nyangaka on computer usage at the eight Arusha schools.

And in another extremely exciting development, it appears that Reneal IEO is going to be the beneficiary of a large donation of laptops from a Bay Area company!  More details soon as we learn more…  There will be lots to talk about at the upcoming Reneal Board of Directors meeting!
