Countdown! [2016-08-23]

Neal and I spent the last week enjoying the waning days of summer in the Sierra Nevadas on a backpacking trip.  Now it’s full speed ahead for Cebu!  Since my last post, Jade, Rhog, and Lloyd have been to Carmen National High School and Tominjao National High School to complete the Ethernet cabling and lab set-up.  The final boxes of equipment for 2016 have arrived at Compostela National High School and are ready for deployment to the various schools.  Jade has compiled a list of gear that we still need to buy, including LOTS of power strips from one of our favorite Cebu suppliers, Ace Hardware!

Neal headed to the computer pretty much the minute we walked in the door on Sunday to continue his work on the 16.04-based system.  Even in the woods his brain was whirring with thoughts of software, and he’s had several breakthroughs already since we’ve been home.  I’ve been working on the schedule with Jade, trying to get all of the work to fit between holidays and school events and teacher trainings.  It’s never easy!  I will also print out the packing list and start getting serious about pulling gear together for the trip.  We’ll be carrying only one server this time (compared to FIVE in January!), so hopefully it will be a bit easier.

We will interrupt our preparation time for a couple of days this week to dash up to Portland for a visit to Free Geek (www.freegeek.org).  We are so thrilled that we will again be recipients of a hardware grant from them!  They are inundated with used 17” and 19” monitors that no one really wants anymore, but are perfect for us to ship to Cebu for the schools there.  I believe that we will soon be able to meet our goal of replacing all of the ancient CRT monitors at the Reneal schools in Cebu!  It will be a tiring trip, flying up early tomorrow morning to Portland, renting a truck, loading, and then making the long drive back, but how exciting to think that we can keep computers in use with these “new” monitors from Free Geek!

Katherine and Marcus will be coming over this weekend to help us get started with packing the monitors and to continue packing the Polycom laptops.  I’m hoping to get one more batch of the laptops off to Cebu before we leave, so we’ll have lots of units prepositioned for the 2017 projects.  2017 is looking like a great year already!
