Corporate Identity [2013-05-05]

Like every corporation, Reneal IEO has a board of directors.  The corporate by-laws of Reneal IEO require this board to meet at least twice a year.  While financial reports and official travel policies and action items don’t have the cachet of a trip abroad, they are an absolutely essential underpinning of our 501(c)(3) corporation.  We are fortunate to have very enthusiastic and diligent board members who share a passion for the Reneal IEO mission along with a goal of exceptional accountability and transparency.

The Reneal IEO board met yesterday.  Among other things, we reviewed results from the 2013 Philippines trip, discussed status and concerns for the 2013 Tanzania trip, and looked ahead to the 2014 Philippines projects.  More on this soon.  However the bottleneck for implementing more IT labs in the Philippines and Tanzania is used computer hardware, so we discussed how to spread the word for what is needed (a good start is contacting us at contact.reneal@gmail.com).

The board had an interesting discussion back in January about corporate identity.  The full name of the non-profit is Reneal International Education Outreach Incorporated, and we’ve shortened that at various times to either “Reneal” or “RIEO”.  “Reneal” connotes a grassroots, people-centered, trust-based organization and we like that – it underscores our belief that this is all about being in a community enabling students and teachers to improve their lives through technology.  These very personal connections have helped us find ways to make a difference.  At the same time, the formal “RIEO” brings forth an image of a high rigor, professional, well-managed corporation; as a long-time public servant, I resonate strongly with those values.

Perhaps it is obvious in retrospect, but one of board members said “Why not Reneal IEO?”  So we’ve ended up as Reneal IEO, trying to capture the essence of both of those ideals: a corporation managed with impeccable care and rigor but maintaining its roots in the individual schools and in its connections with educators in the field.
